My Thoughts on Christian Metal

By Jesse Larsen

Based on some of the lyrics, I have no doubt that there are good intentions behind some Christian metal bands, but I also think that they sometimes give the enemies of God occasion to mock or blaspheme when they focus more on being dark and edgy than glorifying God. I realize that there are dark subjects in the Bible, like the lake of fire, the anti-Christ and the plagues that will come during the tribulation period.... but some of these bands are not much different from secular metal bands in some ways. For example, when a band keeps coming out with one angry song after another, I don't think that is glorifying to God, because it shows that they are not slow to anger. James 1:19 says "let every man be slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God". Ephesians 4:26-27 says "Be angry and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil".

So, I am aware that anger is not automatically a sin, but it becomes a problem when we let it fester, and I would say that is when we are letting the sun go down on our wrath and giving place to the devil. If the majority of songs that a band is coming out with are angry songs, they should probably examine whether or not they have let their anger fester. That is something I have had to examine about myself, even at times in my Christian life. Also, I realize that the band "Impending Doom" means well with their "repentagram" symbol, but they are kind of setting themselves up for misunderstanding by using a symbol that looks so similar to the pentagram.

My Testimony

Be Angry And Do Not Sin
